Stoicism and difficult people (On Other People)

They will do what their nature does.

Stoicism has a practical answer to difficult people: expect them. In a famous passage of the Meditations, Marcus Aurelius starts the day by listing the kinds of people he is likely to meet, the meddling, the ungrateful, the arrogant, the deceitful. He does this so that their behavior, when it comes, does not knock him off balance.

The reasoning is that much of our distress comes from surprise. We picture an ideal version of a person and then feel wronged each time the real one shows up. If you anticipate the real behavior, the sting is smaller and your energy stays available for useful action. Marcus also reminds himself that such people act from ignorance of what is good, and that they are fellow members of the human community whom he is meant to work alongside.

The mistake is using this as a license to write people off. Expecting rudeness does not mean accepting it, giving up on anyone or lowering your standards. You can still set limits, ask for change and hold people accountable. What you drop is the repeated emotional jolt of being amazed that someone behaved exactly as they always do.

This practice supports the inner citadel. Other people's behavior is outside your control, while your judgment of it and your reply remain yours.

Example

Your uncle makes the same pointed remark about your job at every family dinner. This time, on the drive over, you remind yourself he will probably do it again. When he does, you smile, answer briefly and change the subject. The evening stays pleasant, and you still tell him later you would rather he dropped it.

Try it this week

Before a meeting or gathering this week, name the behavior you expect from the hardest person there and plan a calm reply in advance.
