Talk in terms of the other person's interests (Talk in Terms of the Other's Interests)

Frame your topic through their world.

Talk in terms of the other person's interests is Carnegie's guidance for any conversation where you want to be heard. You may have something of your own to share, a product, a plan or a request, but you present it through the lens of what the listener cares about. The content stays yours. The framing becomes theirs.

The reason it works is attention. People are naturally tuned to their own concerns and tend to drift when a conversation centers on someone else's. Present your idea as a solution to a problem they already have, or a step toward a goal they already hold, and it suddenly feels relevant. Carnegie illustrated this with stories of people who won over doubters by first learning what those doubters valued.

The mistake is pretending to care about someone's interests just to get your way. Carnegie insists on the genuine version, where you actually take the time to understand and value what matters to the other person. Faked interest tends to show through and erodes trust. Real interest makes every later conversation easier.

This principle brings the deck together. It builds on listening, which tells you what the other person cares about, and on arousing an eager want, which links your aims to theirs.

Example

You want your city council member to support a new bike lane. Instead of talking about cycling, you open with the traffic complaints she raised in her last newsletter and show how the lane could ease congestion near the school. She asks for your figures and puts the item on the next meeting agenda.

Try it this week

Before your next pitch or request, rewrite your first sentence so it names a goal or problem the listener already cares about.
