Unity principle

We for us is the shortcut.

The unity principle is the most recent addition to Robert Cialdini's framework. He introduced it in Pre-Suasion and included it in the expanded edition of Influence. Unity is about shared identity, the sense that someone is one of us. It goes beyond liking. When we feel a person belongs to our family, hometown, faith, profession or chosen group, we respond to them as if they were an extension of ourselves.

Cialdini argues this makes unity especially powerful, because it can bypass careful evaluation. A request from one of our own feels less like persuasion and more like loyalty. That is why appeals that stress we, our people or our community can move people strongly. Groups of all kinds, from families to companies, rely on this bond to act together.

The mistake is treating every appeal to shared identity as manipulation. Unity is also the basis of real solidarity, mutual aid and belonging, and those are worth a great deal. The defense is the same test used for liking. Ask whether the same case, made by an outsider, would convince you. If not, notice what the shared identity is carrying that the argument itself is not.

Unity rounds out the seven principles. It is the deepest form of liking, and it often amplifies every other lever in the deck.

Example

A fellow graduate of your university emails asking you to invest in her startup, opening with memories of the campus and a shared professor. You feel an immediate warmth toward the idea. You ask yourself whether you would invest if a stranger sent the same pitch, and you request her financial plan before deciding.

Try it this week

When an appeal this week leans on shared identity, restate the request without the we and judge it on that version.
