Card 2 of 5 · 5 Laws of Stupidity

Cipolla second law of stupidity (Second Law - Independence)

It cuts across every other category.

Cipolla's second law of stupidity says the probability of a person being stupid is unrelated to any other trait they have. Degrees, titles, income and social class do not lower the odds. A brilliant scientist and a careless driver can both produce acts that hurt others and help no one.

Cipolla drew this from observation across groups. Whether he looked at manual workers or university professors, he saw the same share of damaging, pointless behaviour. The insight matters because we lean on surface markers as shortcuts. We assume the well-dressed person, the expert, or the senior manager will act sensibly in every situation, and so we stop checking.

The limit of the law is just as important. It does not say experts are worse than everyone else, or that credentials are useless. A trained surgeon still knows more about surgery than you do. The point is narrower: expertise in one domain does not guarantee good judgement in every decision that person makes. Distrusting all experts would be its own kind of mistake.

This links to the idea of the halo effect in psychology, where one impressive quality colours our view of everything else about a person. Cipolla's law is a reminder to judge actions on their own merits.

Example

A highly respected senior engineer insists on pushing a risky change late on a Friday without review. The team defers because of his reputation, and the release breaks over the weekend. A team aware of the second law would keep the same review rule for everyone, regardless of seniority.

Try it this week

This week, apply one review or check to a trusted senior person's decision exactly as you would to a newcomer's.
