Card 1 of 4 · Meaning Over Comfort

Viktor Frankl last of the human freedoms (The Last Freedom)

Between event and response is choice.

The last of the human freedoms is Viktor Frankl's name for the ability to choose your stance toward circumstances you cannot change. In the camps, prisoners lost their homes, families, names and safety. Frankl observed that something still remained in their hands: how they would meet what was happening to them.

He drew this from what he saw around him. Some prisoners shared their last piece of bread or comforted others, while living in the same conditions as those who gave up. For Frankl, this showed that people are not simply products of their environment. There is a space, however narrow, where a person decides who they will be. He later built his therapeutic work on that observation, treating responsibility for one's response as a core part of being human.

The idea is easy to misread as saying suffering does not matter, since you can always choose to feel fine about it. Frankl said the opposite. Meaning can be found in suffering that truly cannot be avoided. Pain that can be removed should be removed. Choosing an attitude is not a reason to stay in a situation you could leave.

This connects with the Stoic dichotomy of control, though Frankl came to it through lived experience and psychiatry rather than philosophy.

Example

Your flight is cancelled and you are stuck overnight in an airport. You cannot change the schedule. You can decide whether the evening becomes a stewing complaint or a few quiet hours to call your sister, finish a book, and help the confused traveller next to you find a charger.

Try it this week

When a situation this week truly cannot be changed, write one sentence about the attitude you choose to bring to it.
