Card 3 of 4 · Meaning Over Comfort

Frankl three sources of meaning (Meaning Through Work, Love, Suffering)

Three doors, all open.

Frankl's three sources of meaning are the backbone of logotherapy, the school of psychotherapy he founded. The first is creative: making a work or doing a deed. The second is experiential: encountering beauty, truth, or another person through love. The third is attitudinal: the stance a person takes toward suffering that cannot be changed.

The value of the model is that it widens the search. Many people look for meaning in one place only, most often their career. When that door shuts, through job loss, illness or retirement, it can feel as if meaning itself has gone. Frankl's framework reminds you that the other two routes remain. You can still love, still appreciate, and still choose how to carry a burden with dignity.

The common mistake is to treat the three as a ranking or a list to tick off. Frankl did not present one as superior. Different people, and the same person at different times, find meaning through different doors. A season of caring for a newborn may be mostly experiential. A season of illness may be mostly attitudinal. Both are full lives.

The model also explains why Frankl believed life never fully loses its meaning. Even when action and experience are restricted, the third path is still available.

Example

A man retires after forty years as a carpenter and feels suddenly useless. Over the next months he starts teaching his grandson to build a birdhouse, joins a walking group by the river, and faces his knee surgery with good humour. Work, love and attitude each give him something back.

Write down one thing you are building, one person or experience you value, and one hardship you are carrying, and notice which feels most alive.
