Assume formlessness

A defined position is a targetable position.

Assume formlessness is the forty-eighth and last law in Greene's book. It argues that anyone who commits to one fixed shape, one stance, one method, becomes predictable, and predictable players are easier to outmanoeuvre. The answer, Greene says, is to stay fluid and adapt to the situation.

The idea has deep roots. Sun Tzu wrote about the strength of being formless in war, and the image of water taking the shape of its container recurs across Taoist thought and martial arts. In business, it resembles the advice to avoid locking into one product or plan when conditions are changing. Greene placed it last because flexibility only works once you have the skills and judgement to choose well in the moment. Without those, being formless is just being lost.

The trap is becoming so adaptable that you stand for nothing. People who change their views to suit every audience lose trust quickly. The useful version separates the levels: principles stay steady, while methods, timing and tactics remain open to change.

Defensively, the law reminds you that a very predictable routine can be exploited, whether by a competitor or a scammer. Knowing that lets you vary what should vary and hold firm on what should not.

Example

A small café has relied on one big office nearby for its lunch trade. When the office moves to remote work, a rigid owner would wait for customers to return. This owner keeps the same quality and values but shifts to breakfast, delivery and weekend brunch within a month.

Try it this week

Write down one principle you will not change and one method you are using to live by it that you could adjust this week.
