Card 6 of 7 · The Psychology of Money

Knowing when you have enough

The hardest financial skill is stopping the goalposts from moving.

Knowing when you have enough is, for Morgan Housel, among the most important and least taught money skills. As income and savings grow, expectations tend to rise with them. The finish line keeps sliding forward, so people who are objectively comfortable can still feel behind.

Housel explains this through social comparison and the way ambition adapts. There is always someone with more, and each new level quickly becomes normal. That is why no salary or net worth produces a lasting sense of sufficiency on its own. The feeling comes from a decision, a conscious line that says this covers what I need and value. Housel warns that chasing more without such a line can push people into risks that endanger what they already have.

The pitfall runs the other way too. Declaring a very low number just to look content is a performance, not the skill Housel describes. Enough has to be an honest internal judgement. It can also be revised upward when a genuinely new goal appears. The important thing is that you move it deliberately, not without noticing.

This connects to the next card on time. Once money is enough, its most valuable use is often buying freedom rather than more things.

Example

A designer gets a big raise and immediately starts browsing larger flats and newer cars. Before signing anything, she lists what she wanted a year ago, and realises she already has it. She keeps her current flat, raises her savings, and books a long trip with her father instead.
