Latticework of mental models (The Latticework)

Many models, not one.

The latticework of mental models is Charlie Munger's name for a broad, connected set of big ideas taken from many fields. In his 1994 talk on elementary worldly wisdom, he argued that isolated facts are not enough. You need models from psychology, economics, mathematics, engineering, biology and more, arranged so that they support and check one another.

The reason is that reality does not respect academic boundaries. A business problem can be partly about incentives, partly about human bias, partly about physical limits and partly about statistics. Munger liked the saying that to a man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Someone trained in one discipline tends to force every situation into its framework, and misses whatever lies outside it.

The trap is collecting models as trivia. Reading about dozens of frameworks feels productive, but the latticework only helps if you actually reach for it when a decision is in front of you. Knowing the name of a model you never apply is like owning tools you leave in the box.

Every other card in this deck is one strand of the latticework. The real skill is combining them, for example using incentives and second-order thinking together, or checking a confident plan with inversion and a margin of safety.

Example

A café owner sees sales fall. Thinking only like an accountant, she cuts costs. Adding other lenses, she notices that a new office opened with its own coffee bar, that her prices sit just above a psychological threshold, and that the queue now looks long because of slower equipment. Several small models reveal several fixes.

Try it this week

For one problem this week, look at it through three different disciplines and write one insight from each.
