Card 2 of 5 · The Art of Being Right, Five

Changing the subject fallacy (The Diversion)

Move the fight to where you're stronger.

Changing the subject is one of the stratagems Schopenhauer describes in The Art of Being Right. When a person senses they are about to lose an argument, they move it to a related issue where they have a better case. Often it is done smoothly, so the new topic seems like a natural next step rather than an escape.

It works because attention is limited. Once a fresh point is raised, both sides feel they must respond to it, and the earlier question fades from memory. By the end of the exchange people recall the second argument clearly and the first one hardly at all. The person who was losing has effectively avoided defeat without conceding anything.

Schopenhauer's catalogue is best used defensively. The practical response is simple: name the shift politely and bring the discussion back. Saying that you are happy to discuss the new point after the first one is settled usually works. The misuse is adopting the move yourself with colleagues, friends or partners. In a relationship built on trust, deliberate diversion damages both the conversation and your credibility.

The tactic is related to the red herring and to whataboutism, where a criticism is answered by pointing at someone else's faults.

Example

A tenant asks the landlord when the broken heating will be fixed. The landlord replies that the tenant was late with rent in spring and the hallway is always cluttered. Ten minutes later they are arguing about the hallway. The tenant notices, agrees to discuss the hallway separately, and asks again for a repair date.
