Card 4 of 5 · The Art of Being Right, Five

Appeal to authority fallacy

Find a name the audience respects and stand behind it.

The appeal to authority fallacy happens when a claim is presented as true mainly because an admired person or institution backs it. Schopenhauer included it among his stratagems with a sharp observation: the most effective authority is one your listener already respects, whether or not that authority is relevant to the question.

It works because people read social signals quickly and arguments slowly. A familiar name, a title or a famous organisation creates a feeling of safety, and that feeling arrives before any reasoning does. Schopenhauer also noticed that many people hold their opinions on trust and are uncomfortable questioning a figure they have been taught to admire.

The mistake runs both ways. Ignoring authority altogether is foolish, since experts often carry knowledge you could not rebuild on your own in a reasonable time. The question to ask is whether the authority is being used to support a reasoned case or to stand in for one that is missing. Is the expert speaking within their field? What reasons did they actually give?

This connects to the bandwagon effect, where popularity rather than evidence is offered as proof.

Example

A friend insists a particular cold remedy works because a famous athlete swears by it on social media. The athlete is an expert in running, not medicine. A good reply is curious, not dismissive: what did the athlete say about why it works, and is there anything from people who study colds that agrees?
