Identity foreclosure

You decided who you were too early.

Identity foreclosure is a term from developmental psychology for committing to an identity without first exploring other options. The idea builds on Erik Erikson's work on identity and was developed by the psychologist James Marcia, who described several identity statuses depending on whether a person has explored and whether they have committed.

Foreclosure is appealing because it removes uncertainty. A young person who takes on a family career, belief system or life plan without question gets a clear path and approval from the people around them. The cost appears later. Without exploration, the commitment may never have been tested against who the person is becoming, and it can start to feel borrowed.

The mistake is assuming every early commitment is suspect. Some people choose early, look back honestly later, and still find the choice fits. What matters is whether a commitment has been examined, not when it was made. Questioning a path you took young can end in recommitting to it with more conviction.

In Marcia's framework, the healthier destination is identity achievement, a commitment that comes after a period of real exploration, sometimes called moratorium.

Example

A man has run his father's hardware shop since he was nineteen. At forty-five he takes an evening woodworking class on a whim and loves designing furniture. He does not sell the shop. Instead he converts the back room into a small workshop, and for the first time the business feels like his own choice.

Try it this week

Write down one commitment you made before age twenty-five and list the reasons you would choose it again today.
