Black swan event (The Black Swan)

The rare event dominates the history.

A black swan event, in Nassim Nicholas Taleb's sense, has three features. It sits outside normal expectations, it carries extreme consequences, and once it has happened people construct explanations that make it seem predictable. The name comes from the old European belief that all swans were white, which held until black swans were found in Australia.

Taleb's point is that many fields are dominated by these outliers. A few events reshape markets, a few books make most of the sales, and a few chance meetings change the course of a career. Forecasting models built around average outcomes tend to miss them, because the extremes are where the real impact lies. Being surprised is therefore normal, not a failure of effort.

The mistake is using the idea as a reason never to plan. Taleb does not suggest abandoning preparation. He suggests planning for what can be planned while reducing your exposure to catastrophic shocks and keeping some exposure to rare positive ones. An emergency fund protects against the bad tail. Meeting new people and trying small experiments leave room for the good one.

This idea leads directly to antifragility, which asks how a system can do more than survive these shocks.

Example

A family plans its finances around steady salaries and modest raises. Then a sudden factory closure in their town removes one income overnight. Nobody predicted it, though afterwards everyone points to warning signs. The family that kept six months of savings rides it out. The one that spent every spare cent on a bigger mortgage struggles.
