Orientation in the OODA loop (Orientation Is the Critical Step)

How you see the situation determines what you can do in it.

Orientation in the OODA loop is the step where you make sense of what you observe. John Boyd considered it the heart of the whole cycle, the step that shapes everything that follows. It is built from your background, training, culture, past experiences and the mental models you carry around.

Boyd's point was that observation is never neutral. Your orientation filters what you even notice, and then frames the choices that seem available. Two rivals can stare at the same market change and see completely different things, one a threat to defend against, the other an opening to exploit. In Boyd's view, much of a contest is decided here. If you can question your own lens, or lead an opponent to adopt the wrong one, you gain an edge before any visible move is made.

The limit is believing you can change your orientation at will. It is built from years of patterns, so you cannot simply choose a new one in the middle of a crisis. What you can do is become aware of it, seek out views that challenge it, and work deliberately over time to build a richer set of mental models.

This is one reason Boyd urged reading widely across fields. A broader set of models gives orientation more to draw on.

Example

A long-time bookshop owner sees an online retailer open nearby as the end of the business. A newer owner on the same street sees the same news as a chance to host author events and reading clubs the retailer cannot offer. The facts are identical. Their orientations lead them to opposite plans.

Before a big decision this week, ask someone with a very different background how they read the situation, and note what you missed.
