Getting inside the OODA loop (Get Inside the Opponent's Loop)

Make them react to what you've already moved past.

Getting inside the OODA loop is John Boyd's phrase for operating at a faster tempo than your opponent. If you observe, orient, decide and act before they finish their own cycle, their actions are always aimed at a situation you have already left behind. They are, in effect, fighting a version of you that no longer exists.

Boyd argued that this creates more than a timing advantage. An opponent who keeps finding their moves outdated grows confused and uncertain. Their plans stop matching reality, they hesitate, and their organization can begin to break down from within. He saw this pattern in many military campaigns where a smaller or equally matched force overwhelmed a rival by changing the situation faster than the rival could adapt.

The mistake is treating speed as the only lever. Boyd's real idea was control of tempo, and that can include slowing down on purpose. Letting an opponent settle into a predictable rhythm and then breaking it can disorient them more than constant haste. Going fast all the time can also exhaust your own side and make you predictable in a different way.

This idea depends on good orientation. You can only move ahead of an opponent's loop if you understand the situation better than they do.

Example

In a five-a-side football game, one team keeps switching the point of attack with quick passes. Every time the defenders shift to cover one side, the ball is already on the other. After ten minutes the defenders are arguing with each other about who should have marked whom, and the gaps get bigger.

In your next negotiation or competitive task, identify one moment where you can change the situation before the other side has finished reacting to the last change.
