Maneuver warfare (Maneuver, Not Attrition)

Win by position, not by force.

Maneuver warfare is an approach to conflict that aims to make an opponent's strength irrelevant rather than overcome it head on. John Boyd was one of its most influential advocates. He contrasted it with attrition, the style of trying to win by wearing down the enemy through sheer weight of resources until one side runs out.

Boyd's reasoning was that attrition favors whoever already has more, and even the winner pays dearly. Maneuver changes the terms. By moving to a place, time or dimension where the opponent cannot bring their advantages to bear, a smaller force can unbalance a larger one. The aim is to break the rival's ability to resist, not to destroy every unit. In business the same logic suggests avoiding a fight on the incumbent's strongest ground and finding a niche, a customer or a feature where their size helps them little.

The limit is turning this into a rule to avoid all direct contests. Sometimes the prize sits exactly where the opponent is strongest, and you have to compete there. Maneuver is the preferred default when a better position exists, not a refusal ever to meet force with force.

Maneuver depends on a fast OODA loop. You need quick orientation to spot the opening before the rival closes it.

Example

A small local gym cannot match a national chain on price or equipment. Instead it offers small group classes for new parents, with a supervised play corner for toddlers. The chain's huge floor and low fees mean little to that group, and the small gym fills its morning classes within a few months.
