Crush your enemy totally

A defeated rival is the next campaign's starting condition.

Crush your enemy totally is Greene's fifteenth law and probably his most notorious. Its claim is that a rival who is only partly defeated will regroup, nurse a grievance, and come back. Greene supports it with examples from war and dynastic politics where leniency led to revenge.

Stripped of its dramatic language, the useful point is about unfinished conflict. Disputes left half-settled, with lingering resentment and no clear outcome, often flare up again. In legal, business and diplomatic settings, that is why careful negotiators seek complete agreements rather than vague truces. Either resolve something properly or think twice before opening it at all.

The danger of misreading this law is serious. Greene wrote about genuinely adversarial situations, rivals who would happily treat you the same way. Applying a scorched-earth mindset to coworkers, family or friends does lasting damage and usually turns ordinary disagreements into real enmity. Total resolution in a healthy relationship means a full, honest conversation, not destroying the other person.

Defensively, recognising this law helps you see escalation coming. If someone treats a minor disagreement as a war to be won outright, step back, document things, and seek a clear, fair settlement. And if you are tempted to finish someone off, ask whether they are really an enemy.

Example

Two flatmates argue about bills, then agree to drop it without settling who owes what. Every month the topic resurfaces, angrier each time. When they finally sit down, set up a shared spreadsheet, and agree on a clear split in writing, the conflict genuinely ends, with both of them still friends.

Try it this week

Look for one recurring disagreement in your life and propose a clear, written resolution that both sides can accept.
