Use the surrender tactic

Surrender is a form of attack.

Use the surrender tactic is the twenty-second law in Greene's book. Its idea is that fighting on from a hopeless position can destroy you completely, while giving way can protect what you have. Yielding lets the stronger side relax, buys time, and keeps your resources intact for a later moment.

The principle appears across military history and in many martial arts, where moving with a strong force rather than against it avoids being broken. In everyday life, it can mean conceding a point you cannot win, accepting a setback gracefully, or stepping back from an argument that is going nowhere. Pride often pushes people to keep fighting long after the cost exceeds anything they could gain.

The limit is that not every losing battle should be abandoned. Sometimes standing your ground matters because of what the fight protects: a principle, a person, your integrity or a relationship. Surrender as a reflex to any difficulty is just avoidance. The law is about deliberate, strategic choices.

Defensively, it is worth knowing that apparent surrender can be a move. When an opponent suddenly gives way with little resistance, stay alert. They may simply have changed their mind, or they may be regrouping. Accept the concession graciously, but keep your agreements clear and written.

Example

In a team meeting, your proposal is outvoted after a heated discussion. Instead of arguing for another hour and souring the room, you accept the decision, offer to help implement it, and keep notes on the risks you raised. Three months later, when those risks appear, people listen to you.

Try it this week

The next time you are losing an argument that does not touch your principles, concede cleanly and note what you would need to revisit it later.
