Outrage algorithm (The Outrage Filter)

You only see what produced enough reaction to surface.

The outrage algorithm is an informal name for the way recommendation systems end up favouring content that provokes strong emotions. Feeds learn from what earlier viewers reacted to, and anger, fear and moral indignation reliably produce reactions. A balanced explanation or a quiet observation usually does not, so it rarely travels far.

The result is a selection effect. What appears in your feed is not a random cross-section of what people post or think. It is a slice that has already passed through a filter for intensity. If you take that slice as a mirror of the world, the world looks angrier, more divided and more extreme than it is, while the large calm middle stays mostly invisible.

The main mistake is confusing the curated feed with reality itself. You do not need a detailed correction for each post to avoid this. Simply holding in mind that a filter sits between you and the world changes how you weigh what you see, and makes it easier to treat a heated thread as a sample of reactions, not a census.

This pattern explains why manufactured consensus often feels so convincing. Coordinated, emotional posts are exactly what the filter tends to promote.

Example

After an evening on social media, you feel sure that people in your country can no longer agree on anything. The next morning, you chat with neighbours, a shop owner and a coworker, and find them mostly relaxed and reasonable. Your feed had shown you the fiercest voices, not the typical ones.

Try it this week

When a post makes you angry this week, pause and ask whether you are seeing a typical view or a filtered extreme.
