Card 5 of 8 · The Prince, Core Eight

Machiavelli half measures (The Wound You Don't Close)

Half-measures create the next problem.

Machiavelli half measures is the idea, found throughout The Prince, that incomplete action is often the most dangerous choice. In chapter 5 he discusses cities used to freedom and argues that a conqueror who leaves their old order in place will face rebellion. Elsewhere he criticises rulers who injure enemies just enough to provoke them but not enough to stop them.

The reasoning is that a partial step produces resentment without resolution. The people affected feel the cost, but the underlying problem survives and can regroup. You have spent goodwill and still have to deal with the issue later, often from a weaker position. Sometimes doing nothing would have been less costly.

The limit is that this principle can be misused to justify doubling down. If a decision was wrong, pushing it harder only makes the damage complete. The lesson is not to commit more firmly to whatever you started, but to choose between a full resolution and a clean reversal. Both can be better than lingering in between.

This pairs with the advice on doing necessary harms all at once. Together they describe a single principle: once a hard course is clearly right, carry it through completely and quickly.

Example

You have a recurring argument with a flatmate about cleaning and decide to address it with a vague comment in the group chat. It annoys them, changes nothing and leaves the tension higher than before. Either a clear conversation with an agreed rota or simply letting it go would have worked better.

Try it this week

Look at one problem you have been addressing in small, half-hearted steps and decide whether to resolve it fully or drop it.
