Pareto analysis (The Calibration)

Re-run the analysis. Things shift.

A Pareto analysis is a review that ranks your inputs by how much of the result each one produces. The catch is that the ranking changes. The client, product or habit that once delivered most of your value can drift into the middle of the pack, or even become a cost.

Change is the reason. Markets move, people's needs evolve, and your own goals shift with age and circumstance. A list that was right a few years ago reflects a world that no longer exists. Organisations and individuals often keep serving yesterday's best customers or repeating yesterday's winning routine long after the payoff has faded.

The opposite mistake is re-ranking so often that nothing has time to work. Many valuable efforts, such as building a skill, a relationship or a new line of business, take months to show results. If you reshuffle priorities every week you never let them compound. For most areas of life, a review every few months is a sensible rhythm.

Think of it as a regular check-up rather than a single diagnosis. Put a recurring date in your calendar, rerun the numbers, and compare them with the list you are still acting on.

Example

A parent realises the after-school activities chosen two years ago no longer fit. One child has lost interest in football but lights up at the coding club squeezed in on Saturdays. A quick review of how each hour feels for the family leads to swapping the schedule around the activity that now matters most.
