Hostile design

Public spaces are shaped by who they're built to exclude.

Hostile design is the practice of building public objects so that some uses become uncomfortable or impossible. A bench split by armrests cannot be slept on. Studs on a ledge stop people sitting. A sloped surface stops anyone resting. The object still looks like ordinary street furniture, but part of its job is to exclude.

It works because it is silent. No sign says who is unwelcome, so there is nothing to argue with. The decision was made by a planner, a property owner or a city office long before you arrived. Critics point out that it often targets people with nowhere else to go, while everyone else barely notices. Once you learn the pattern, though, you start seeing it on every block, in station waiting areas and outside shops.

The limit is that not every awkward surface is hostile. Some shapes exist for drainage, safety, weather or the flow of crowds, and they happen to affect who stays. The skill is judging the main purpose of a design rather than assuming bad intent everywhere. Ask what problem the feature was clearly built to solve.

Hostile design is choice architecture applied to bodies and streets. The same question applies: who designed this space, and who were they designing it for?

Example

A library entrance adds a row of planters along a low wall where teenagers used to sit after school. The planters look decorative, and the building never mentions the change. Within a week the wall is empty, and the students have moved to a parking lot across the road.

Try it this week

On your next walk through town, pick three pieces of street furniture and ask what each one was built to prevent.
