Decoy effect (Decoy Pricing)

The middle option exists to make one of the others look right.

The decoy effect, also called decoy pricing, happens when a seller adds an option that few people are meant to choose. Its role is comparison. Placed next to a target option, it makes that target feel obviously sensible, so more people pick it than would if the decoy were absent.

Researchers describe this as asymmetric dominance. When one option is plainly better than the decoy on every point, while a third option is merely different, people drift toward the one that beats the decoy. Dan Ariely made the pattern widely known in Predictably Irrational. It works because we judge value by contrast, not in isolation. Most of us have no idea what a subscription is truly worth, but we can easily see that one plan beats another.

The mistake is treating every three-tier price list as a trick. Often the middle plan really is the right fit for most buyers, and that is why it exists. A decoy has a telltale shape: it is noticeably worse value than a neighbor, so almost no informed person would pick it. If the middle option is good value on its own, it is just an option.

The defense is to price each option against your actual needs, ignoring the others, before you compare.

Example

A cinema sells popcorn in small, medium and large. The medium costs almost as much as the large but holds far less. Standing at the counter, the large suddenly feels like the smart buy, even though you only wanted a small snack before the film started.
